Product Description

BestSolv® Zulu MAG Engineered Fluid is a fluorinated ketone fluid that excels as a cover gas agent for the protection of molten magnesium during casting operations. Compared to other cover gas agents, BestSolv® Zulu MAG significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

This product is an exact molecule, drop-in replacement for 3M™ Novec™ 612.

Recommended Applications

  • Open casting of ingots, direct chill casting, sand casting or investment casting
  • High pressure die casting with hot or cold chamber melting furnaces
  • Preparation of alloys from pure magnesium or other alloys
  • Remelting of scrap from casting processes
  • Magnesium casting applications with custom gas mixing equipment from Polycontrols

Features and Benefits

  • Drop-in replacement for 3M™ Novec™ 612
  • Protects pure magnesium or its alloys at melt temperatures from 650 ºC to 800 ºC (1170 °F to 1450 °F)
  • Replacement for previous fluids: Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), such as HFC-134a, HFC-245fa
  • When replacing SF₆ in casting applications, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by more than 99%
  • When replacing HFC-134a in casting applications, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by more than 68%
  • SNAP EPA accepted substitute for ozone depleting substances
  • Not subject to SARA Title III (EPCRA) reporting regulation
  • Not a hazardous air pollutant (HAP) – Not regulated under NESHAP
  • Non-flammable
  • Electrically non-conductive
  • Low Global Warming Potential (GWP)
  • Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)
  • Clear, colorless, low odor
  • High molecular weight
